“James raises over £2.7k for the intensive care unit that saved his life.”
We are hugely proud of our very own James McComish who has raised over £2700 for a local intensive care unit that saved his life in October 2021.
James, who is Managing Director of McComish Insurance Brokers, part of the A-One Insurance Group, completed the Virtual London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April to raise money for the Poole and Bournemouth Intensive Care Unit.
In October 2021, James became extremely ill with Covid and was put on a ventilator with his life hanging in the balance.
James said: “When I became unwell the doctors told me the only option was to put me on a ventilator but there was no guarantee I would wake up. That left me having the hardest conversation I’ve ever had with my family.”
“We are hugely proud.”
James lost three and a half stone during his battle against Covid. He said his legs shrank to half the size and had no strength whatsoever. James didn’t even have enough strength to unlock the keypad on his phone, let alone stand or walk.
James left the hospital after five weeks in intensive care. 18 months later he pounded the
streets for 26.2 miles to support the hospital that saved his life and raise awareness of the incredible care at Poole and Bournemouth Intensive Care Unit.
James added “I completed the marathon in under five hours which I’m extremely proud of. “I wanted to do everything I could to help the hospital ICU because they worked so hard to keep me alive. I am only able to do this because of them. I wanted to say thank you.”
Colleagues here at A-One supported James’ marathon effort by joining him on different legs of the run. James said this gave him the motivation to keep going when it got tough.
James’ route started at Poole Hospital. The route took him past Christchurch Hospital and he finished at Bournemouth Hospital.
Congratulations James! We are really proud of you.
James’ fundraiser continues and can be found through his JustGiving page.
